When gaj means a square yard of area, 1 gaj equals 9 square feet. Multiply the area in square gaj by 9 to get square feet. For example, 70 gaj equals 630 square feet.

Convert square gaj, square feet and square metres in either direction. In this guide, gaj always means square gaj, also called a square yard or sq yd.

Converting the units keeps the same type of area. It cannot calculate a flat's carpet area from its plot area.

Convert square feet back to gaj
Divide square feet by 9 to get square gaj. For example, 900 square feet ÷ 9 = 100 square gaj. To convert square feet to square metres, multiply by 0.09290304.
The area factor comes from squaring the length conversion. One yard is 3 feet, so one square yard is 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. If a measurement is a length in gaj, rather than an area, use the length conversion instead.

Plot area and carpet area describe different things
Plot area describes the land on which the building stands. Carpet area describes the usable internal area of the flat. A 100 gaj plot size does not mean the flat has 900 square feet of usable internal space.
Walls, stairs, lift space, setbacks and the layout affect how much room you can use. Ask for a measured floor plan that states which area is being quoted. A unit conversion cannot determine carpet area from plot area.
Compare the same area measurement
Before comparing prices per square foot, ask each seller whether their figure refers to plot, built-up or carpet area. Use the same measurement for both homes and check the actual room dimensions.
